About Me
Ahlan! My name is Charlotte, a Dutch writer, designer and all around nice girl living in Dubai; which begs the question: what’s a nice girl like me doing in a desert like this. Well, he decided to charm me into marriage and kidnap me into the Middle East. Such is love.
But it wasn’t so straightforward, oh no; he snatched me from Amsterdam to fall in love in China, emigrate to Lebanon, got married in Cyprus and finally moved me here to the UAE. Between this and my own travels I’ve been all over Europe and a fair bit of the Middle East; as well as some parts of Asia, the United States and East Africa in between. I love travel, and I love writing about it.
I also love food: when I’m not cooking, I’m thinking about what to cook, how to make it from scratch and whether husband will approve of the net carb content. And despite his irritating restrictions, I still manage to make every meal look like a work of art; I’m something of a food snob, which makes me rather keen to write about it as well.
But really, as long as the topic is even mildly interesting, I can whip it into shape, in time and on a budget.
And being married to an overworked editor (who regularly throws half his workload on me) means I’m an expert at all things design, especially page layout. It helps that I have a design degree, but no university or company would ever give me as much work as the husband, and certainly not for as little payment – a casual pat on the back is his idea of a thank you, after a day of doing his work. Sigh.
Before I had ever written a coherent sentence or so much as heard of design software, however, I was already an avid artist. Like every other artist worth their salt, I started drawing as soon as I could hold a pencil without having the urge to chew on it (although…). Working in plain old pencils will always remain my foundation, although I have in more recent years started exploring into various other media; including acrylics, watercolours, coloured pencil and digital painting in Photoshop.
